Sleeping on flights
BREANNE, PARENT OF 4 YEAR OLD

Hi Corinne, my daughter is 18 months old and I fly frequently with her. My family is in California so I take her there regularly. We’ve flown all different times of day/night and I can’t even get her to sleep. I’ve learned it’s not worth fighting her or it’s miserable for all of us. We’ve taken the red eye and she stays awake the entire time! Typically she’s happy but it’s exhausting on a 6 hour flight where most are sleeping. Any thoughts on how to get her to sleep? I want to continue to travel with her as often as we can! :) thanks!

Eek--that is tough. My guys would never sleep on planes either, or they would doze off just as we were landing and be a real treat to wake up.

In your situation I would probably try to avoid red eyes if possible, so at least you wouldn't also be shattered from a sleepless night.

I imagine you have tried just about everything, but this article might give you some ideas: http://havebabywilltravel.com/2011/10/22/traveling-with-a-toddler-how-to-help-them-sleep-on-a-plane/

Good luck!

Family-Friendly Getaways
HILARY, PARENT OF 7 YEAR OLD, 4 YEAR OLD

Hi Corinne. Do you have any recommendations for family-friendly getaways on the east coast? We are looking to make a few long weekend trips with our 2 children (2 and 4.5) and would love to explore some new cities that are kid friendly. Thank you.

Handling long flights and time change for almost 8 month old
JESSICA, PARENT OF 3 YEAR OLD, 16 MONTH OLD

We are traveling to Hawaii for the holidays (5 hour time change from EST) with our baby girl over the holidays. Any strategies for the long flight or specific things you'd recommend bringing? In terms of adjusting to a time change, any way to improve our chances of having a somewhat rested /sleeping baby for the holiday? We are stopping in CA for two nights, so hopefully she will have a gradual adjustment. Thanks!

Depending on the time of day of your flight, you will most likely be very
busy! Make sure you have lots of things on hand to keep baby busy. She is
at the age now where she can be easily distracted by snacks, so make sure
to have lots of those on hand as well.

Since you'll be going back in time, your challenge will be to try to keep
her up to a reasonable bedtime, since her actual bedtime will be early
afternoon Hawaii-time. The first day or so you'll probably have a
super-early riser on your hands, but once she's up, try to stretch the
times between naps to close to Hawaii time, and you may need to wake her up
from her naps early to keep from sleeping too long. But it is easier to try
to keep a baby awake than to force them to sleep, so make sure you all get
lots of fresh air, sunshine, and adjust your mealtimes as closely as you
can to Hawaii time as well.

Coming home you'll have a night owl on your hands, and chances are you'll
be tempted to let her sleep in late and have extra long naps during the
day. As painful as it is to wake a sleeping baby, consider that the sooner
you get back onto home time, the happier you'll all be! I go into a bit
more detail here: Tips for Coping with Baby Jet Lag
.

Have a great trip!!

Vacation napping
VIOLETA, PARENT OF 3 YEAR OLD

My baby is still napping twice a day. Is there any point to going on vacation?

Corinne
CORINNE

Of course!

Don't look at your baby's naps as an inconvenience. If your baby is
actually in a decent napping routine, that gives you an opportunity to plan
around them. Also, this is probably the only time you actually CAN nap when
the baby does. I always found at home I'd be distracted by the gazillion
things that needed doing, but when you're on vacation, take advantage and
catch up on your rest!

Timing
MASSAMI, PARENT OF 3 YEAR OLD

When is the best time to travel with a baby?

Corinne
CORINNE

Do you mean time of year or day or age of baby?
