Hi Ashlee-
Any recommendations for a 2nd time mom? I'm due in 3 weeks and have heard that 2nd babies often come earlier and that the labor is typically shorter. Has that been your experience with the mothers you have worked with? Has their recovery been similar to their first pregnancy or have you typically seen the recovery time shorten? Thanks!

Hi Danielle! Thanks for sharing the first question of the day. Generally that seems to be the trend, second and third births are quicker and some times precoeeding a shorter pregnancy. Recovery may be easier and shorter simply because mom has been through it before and is more mentally prepared. But of course every mother and every birth is different. I reccomend still preparing for each birth with good nutrition, exercise, and relaxation practice. |
Good morning,
I am having my first child and would
love to know about options for delivery outside the traditional hospital setting. Where should I start looking in order to understand my options and find the best fit for me and my baby?
Thank you,
Heidi

Good Morning. Congrats! I think one of the best ways to understand your options is to take an independent birth course (something not connected to a hospital). Most instructors will know what's available near you. In general in Maryland you can do a hospital, a birth center connected to a hospital, an independent birth center, or homebirth. All provide different pros and cons. One thing to keep in mind is who will be your birth attendant (mid wife, OB, etc.). Do their statistics and preferences match your birth goals? The Business of Being Born (documentary), Happy Healthy Child (documentary), and Natural Birth the Bradley Way (book) are helpful resources as well. |
