Sunscreen
EMILY, PARENT OF 6 YEAR OLD, 4 YEAR OLD

Would love your recommendations for safe and effective sunscreen for the whole family. Thanks!

MAIA

Hi Emily-
It looks like the response I gave yesterday didn't post; sorry about that. I love Babo's spray sunscreen for our whole family; it's been a game-changer. For my full review of dozens of brands, you can check out this guide: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/sunscreen/

Honest company, superGoop sunscreen
LESLIE, PARENT OF 5 YEAR OLD, 3 YEAR OLD, 7 MONTH OLD

Hi Maia!

Do you trust Honest co. Products? I use their wipes and soaps for my kids among other items. Also, I’ve been turned onto this brand SuperGoop for my sunscreens. Have you heard of them?

Also, can you recommend a self tanner? I know most have parabans.

Thanks!
Leslie

MAIA

Hi Leslie! In general, yes I do trust Honest. It's certainly much better than conventional brands of baby products/cleaning supplies. I'm sorry to say that I'm not at all a fan of SuperGoop, which uses chemical sunscreens in many of their products (such as avebenzone), along with gross preservatives like BHT.
Finally, for a self tanner, check out Lavera. Hope that's helpful!

Green / Clean Wipes
LINDA, PARENT OF 2 YEAR OLD, 13 MONTH OLD, 7 WEEK OLD

Hi there! Any recommendations for green / clean, yet safe and effective baby wipes? We use Water Wipes - any other favorites? Looking for something gentle enough to use on baby's hands and face. Thanks in advance!

MAIA

I love Water Wipes, so you can keep doing what you're doing as far as I am concerned. If you wanted something with a sanitizing element, I love CleanWell: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/cleanwell-natural-hand-sanitizing-wipes/. Babo also makes some gentle wipes that are good for face and hands: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/babo-botanicals-3-in-1-sensitive-baby-wipes/

Cleaning meses
CATERINE, PARENT OF 3 YEAR OLD

What would you recommend to safely and effectively clean high chair messes after meals and also face and hands... any brands and or safe ideas ? I’m not sure if using just a cloth with water does the job for bacteria and if using dish soap will leave residues all the time?

MAIA

The most earth-friendly method would be with a wash-cloth and dish soap (and then yes you'd want to rinse it all down, although if you use a nontoxic dish soap (I like Better Life or Eco-Me), you don't have to worry so much about residue. If you want an antibacterial wipe, I love CleanWell's: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/cleanwell-botanical-disinfectant-wipes/

Area rug recommendations?
MACKENZIE, PARENT OF 4 YEAR OLD

Hi Maia! Thanks for taking the time to answer questions! Do you have any thoughts on where to find non-toxic area rugs?

MAIA

Hi! In general, I tell my clients to opt for natural fiber in their rugs (wool, silk, cotton, or jute). Also, make sure that the gripper underneath is made of natural rubber or latex rather than PVC/vinyl. Finally, be sure to ask the manufacturer if the rug has been treated with flame retardant chemicals. For specific brands that I love, you can check this out: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/choosing-a-non-toxic-area-rug/

Cleaning quartz and marble
SUSAN, PARENT OF 4 YEAR OLD, 16 MONTH OLD

Hi Maia! I'm so excited you returned!

What would you recommend for cleaning marble flooring, marble shower tiles, and quartz counters that would register as a 0 or 1 on ewg.org. It's ok if they are separate products. Thank you!

MAIA

Hi Susan! Check out Earth Friendly products for safe options in this category:). Another one I like (although EWG isn't as big of a fan) is ZumClean.
