Too fast
MCKENNA , PARENT OF 22 MONTH OLD

My supply is so fast that my two week old is just drowning in it. He constantly gasps and gulps during nursing. I’ve tried laying back nursing with him on top, laying in bed on our sides, expressing a bit beforehand, catching him as soon as he starts showing hunger cues so he starts nursing in a calm state, pulling him off when it’s too much ( then he gets angry and latches back on more forcefully, making situation worse). I’m at a loss here on what to do.

Good morning. It sounds like you are already doing a lot of the things I would recommend trying. The good news is, usually by 2-3 weeks, baby starts being able to cope a bit more with a fast let down. You mentioned expressing a bit beforehand -- have you tried expressing through the letdown phase entirely and when you stop spraying, then latching baby. My clients who have used this strategy for a couple of days have found it very effective. In a couple weeks, if this is still an issue we can try "block feeding" to slow things down a bit (feeding on same side 2 feedings in a row) but I would not recommend that just yet as we are still very early in establishing/regulating supply.

MCKENNA

I will try that, thanks! Hopefully he will acclimate to the faster flow soon.

Losing my milk supply..
ALEXANDRA

Alright so my milk supply has dramaticly dropped.. I made the mistake of giving my new born formula more than boob.. I think i even forgot to breast feed for a few days. I want to get him back on JUST breast milk but i can manage to gef my supply back.. Ive tried power pumping but i barley get a few drops an just end up with sore boobs by the end of it. I dont want this to be the end of my breast feeding joruney.. Help!?

Hi, Alex. It's definitely possible to try and rebuild your supply. It will take some time and patience, so hang in there! Try and pump for 15-20 minutes at least every 3 hours during day. Use your hands to help maximize production (massaging, squeezing, compressing, etc). You don't need to turn the pump up too high for this to work (only to comfort!).

Supply Decreased Dramatically
BM

My supply has been extremely low the past few weeks since getting a cold. I’m now over my cold but my supply is still less than an ounce every pump (previously 3-4 oz). I have been taking supplements and drink about a gallon of water a day and still nothing! How do I up my supply?

When you were ill did you take any Sudafed or Benadryl? Sounds like you are doing all the right things. If you can add in a few extra pumping sessions the next few days that should help boost things again!

BM

I took Tylenol Cold once or twice on a really bad day but that was it!

Let’s try the extra pumping for a few days - even if it’s just a few five mins of hand expression throughout day. The more frequent emptying will send message to your body to make more milk. Fingers crossed things bounce back quickly!

My milk supply has literally stopped these past two days despite my pumping and latching attempts, how can I get my milk back?

So sorry to hear you’re having milk production challenges. How old is baby? Has your milk supply been normal until now? And, have you started a new medication or birth-control or changed your nursing or pumping pattern?

ABIGAIL

My baby is 18 days old. It's actually been above normal it was producing a lot of milk but the past two days my baby has not been getting full at all and when I pump for 30 minutes less than an ounce comes out. I haven't changed my eating or drinking habits, pills or feeding pattern.

I’m guessing, your production is just regulating a little bit. You were probably very engorged and producing a lot of milk at first. Now, in comparison, it may feel like you’re not producing at all. In addition, babies usually go through a growth spurt at three weeks… You may be heading that a little bit early and baby may be extra hungry.Let’s continue to nurse on demand at least every three hours for the next couple of days and see if things feel normal again. Always offer baby both breasts per feeding. Stay well hydrated and try to use your hands as much as possible when you’re nursing to empty your breasts as well as possible.

ABIGAIL

Okay thank you!
