Producing Milk
KIKI, PARENT OF 2 YEAR OLD

My son is 3wks old at 1st I was able to fill a bottle up to 4oz but now I'm barely able to get 1oz, I'm not sure what's going on but I want to continue to breastfeed my baby. How can I get my milk back flowing?

Hi there. Congratulations on your new baby! Are you nursing plus pumping or pumping exclusively? The quickest/simplest answer about how to boost milk is to empty your breast more frequently. Generally this means nursing on demand 8-10 times a day and add in a few additional pumping sessions (ie 2-4 times a day). Also make sure you are well hydrated - it makes a difference!

KIKI

I've only been pumping cause I can't get him to latch on at all so I've also been giving him formula as well.

how often are you pumping? if you are exclusively pumping you'll want to pump every 3 hours for 20 minutes. once we increase your supply, we can work on transitioning baby back to breast.

Weak Suck
SARA, PARENT OF 2 YEAR OLD

My daughter is 5 weeks old as of yesterday. She is normally great at breastfeeding. Eating 8-12 times a day, good latch, strong suck, soiling enough diapers, etc. She eats exclusively from my breasts, except for one bottle she receives from her dad in the morning so I can have 1 longer stretch of sleep. Then, starting yesterday evening, her suck during breastfeeding as seemed very weak and she loses interest and falls asleep during much every feeding. I’m worried she isn’t getting enough and wondering why she would randomly start not sucking as well. She still latches on great, but is hardly sucking at all (almost like she would normally do to signal that she was full but I know she’s not full). She’s been way more fussy than usual today as well, although she does seem to still be wetting and soiling enough diapers. Another thing worth mentioning is that I ate a lot of pizza yesterday evening and this morning without thinking about how it may affect my milk (I’m a first time mom) and I think she may not like it? I am just so worried and I want to know she is eating enough. Please help.

Hi Sara - congratulations on your new baby and great job breastfeeding so far. Has today been going better? It’s very likely baby was just having an off night. If you are still experiencing the weak suck, try keeping baby more active by doing breast compressions and pushing milk into baby’s mouth while latched. The
Increased milk flow will keep baby more active at breast. Let me know how it goes!

SARA

Thank you! I do think she was having an off night because she’s been fine ever since. Thank you so much for responding- as a new mom I tend to worry about every little change.

Sore breast
SHAMIRA

I'm having very sharp shooting pain throughout my breast. My supply seems to have decreased as well. I'm not feeling the "heavy"feeling in my breast anymore. Also I wemt from pumping 3-5oz tp barely 2oz. It seems there's a backup or a block as if milk wants to come out but it doesnt.

Sounds like you may have a clogged duct - treatment = warm moist heat and massage. I always think hot showers work the best but you can also do warm compresses (ie fill a diaper with hot water). Massage the clog in the shower and during nursing or pumping. You may need to “clear a path” for the clog to resolve...meaning, massage in front of spot and continue forward toward nipple. Then go back and work on the spot. After you resolve the clog(s) you should see your supply bounce back after a few days
