When it comes to protecting our little ones from mosquitos, ticks, and other harmful bugs, it seems like parents have a “no-win” choice. We’re either using bug repellent with harmful chemicals like DEET (which by the way, the American Academy of Pediatrics says to use sparingly until 2 years old) or letting our little ones be vulnerable to bites, itching, discomfort, and insect-related illnesses.

Toddler applying SallyeAnder bug cream to arm

When it comes to protecting our little ones from mosquitos, ticks, and other harmful bugs, it seems like parents have a “no-win” choice. We’re either using bug repellent with harmful chemicals like DEET (which by the way, the American Academy of Pediatrics says to use sparingly until 2 years old) or letting our little ones be vulnerable to bites, itching, discomfort, and insect-related illnesses.

We’ve tried some all-natural sprays in the past, but they either don’t work or have ingredients that can be dangerous if ingested by young children (like citronella). With summertime being peak mosquito & tick season, we’ve been wondering “are there any DEET-free options that ACTUALLY work?”

We had Tinyhood moms Amanda (in Massachusetts) and Linda (in Colorado) try SallyeAnder’s No-Bite-Me-Cream. And did it work for us? Keep reading!

What is SallyeAnder’s No-Bite-Me-Cream?

It’s an all-natural, kid-safe bug CREAM (yes, a cream) made of herbs and pure essential oils that helps repel mosquitos, ticks, black flies, and fleas. It has nearly 12,000 5-Star reviews and is made by SallyeAnder, a family-run company based in upstate New York. They’ve been making eco-friendly skin products for over 40 years.

Does it ACTUALLY Work?

Short answer: yes. Amanda said, “I have 2 boys (3 and 1) who are constantly outside. Our yard backs up to woods, so it seems like my life is one big tick check and series of mosquito bites. I even found a tick embedded on my 1-year-old’s neck earlier in the summer(!)... but I still was so nervous to put chemical bug spray on my kids. Now, with the No-Bite-Me bug cream, they can play outside for hours — including during that early evening mosquito frenzy — with ZERO bug bites.”

How does it work?

The cream is a mix of herbs and essential oils (like lemongrass and rosemary) that keep the bugs away with the scent. Basically, if you can smell it, the bugs can smell it. To apply, you just rub a few dabs of the cream on any exposed skin and it lasts for 4+ hours. Our kids have loved the independence of applying it themselves. Linda (mom of 2 girls, 5 and 8) said, “I like that it comes in a little jar that I can keep in my bag or pocket and not worry about spills and leaks. The fact that it’s a cream means it's easy to apply and I can apply it inside without a mess."

PLUS, it works as an after-bite cream, so if you forget to apply it and your kids do get bites, you can rub it in to help stop the itching.

What does it smell like?

We were interested to see what it smells like since a lot of reviews talk about the strong scent. We have to say, No-Bite-Me truly smells amazing. “My kids are super sensitive to smells,” Linda said. “I ordered with a bit of hesitation, but when my daughter applied it, she said ‘It smells like lemon cookies!’ and happily spread the cream in.”

A manda agrees — “I’m not kidding, the smell is intoxicating. I would bottle it up as a perfume if I could. Is that weird?”  Apparently, she’s not alone. SallyeAnder has such a huge cult following for this scent that they even recently launched an indoor/outdoor candle with the same smell.
