TIPS FOR BALANCING MENTAL HEALTH

Stay Connected to Friends.

We get it - finding the time and energy to be social can feel really hard right now. But reaching out to friends, even if it’s just a quick text to say hi, can help you feel connected. Plus, chatting with someone else who’s in the same parenting boat can be a great reminder that you’re not alone in this!

Set Realistic Expectations.

You’ve got a new baby to care for, so it’s totally okay to let go of the idea that you can keep up with all the household chores like you did before. It’s perfectly fine for things to get a little messy or for your routine to shift. Sometimes, our expectations can weigh heavier than the actual tasks, and shifting our expectations can help us slow down, catch a breath, and feel more grounded.

Connect with Your Support System.

Don't parent alone! It can be hard to ask for help or accept it when offered, but remember that you don't have to do everything by yourself. Can a neighbor watch your baby and theirs while you take a walk? Did a friend offer to pick up groceries for you? It's OK to say YES. Parenting is often a little easier when done in community with others.

Give yourself Time.

Remember, healing both physically and emotionally after birth takes time, often more time than you had anticipated.. Your mind & body have been through a lot. Adjusting to this new life takes time and will be an ongoing process. Be kind and patient with yourself and don’t hesitate to seek support if you're struggling with postpartum recovery or feelings of sadness or anxiety. Mental health complications are the most common complication of childbirth and can surface at any time in the first year of parenting. Learn more about them here.

Talk About It.

Sometimes the best way to navigate the ups and downs of parenthood is by talking it out. Talk therapy offers a safe space to process emotions, manage stress, and gain perspective—all important things for helping to maintain your mental health. Research shows that regular therapy can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and foster resilience, helping you feel more grounded.

Remember, parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your little one. Don’t hesitate to lean on your support system, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that it’s okay to seek professional help.

Talk therapy can be done in person, over the phone, and even over video chat. Online platforms like BetterHelp can also make it easy to connect with a professional at your convenience, so you can prioritize your mental well-being while balancing the demands of parenthood.
