Remember, weight limit is only one indicator of size!
While the weight limit listed on the package is a helpful starting point, you also need to consider your child’s age and how the diaper fits.
All babies follow their own growth chart, but generally, the correct diaper size for each age is:
- One month: Size 1 (8-12 lbs)
- Two to three months: Size 2 (10-16 lbs)
- Four to eight months: Size 3 (14-24 lbs)
- Six to 30 months: Size 4 (22-37 lbs)
- 21 months to 2 years: Size 5 (27-35 lbs)
- 2 to 3 years: Size 6 (35+lbs)
You also need to consider how the diaper fits your baby’s body because even babies wearing the “correct” size for their weight and age might actually need to go up or down a size.
Signs your baby’s diaper is too big:
- Gaps around the legs and waistband
- The diaper is above the belly button AND both tabs meet or overlap in the middle
- You notice your baby’s diaper is baggy and drooping, especially when they are active
- The diaper material bunches in the groin area
- Frequent leaks and blowouts, especially through the legs
Signs your baby’s diaper is too small:
- Red marks along your baby’s thigh from the diaper leg bands
- Difficulty pulling the diaper tabs to fasten
- Your baby’s belly spilling out over the top of their diaper
- Bum cheeks peeking out the side
- Frequent diaper rashes
- Heavy diaper saturation, waking up with wet pajamas, and blowouts
If you feel like your baby’s diaper is fitting correctly, but you still struggle with leaks and blowouts, it might be time to consider a different diaper brand. All diapers are designed to fit a bit differently, and you may find one brand simply fits your baby better than another. You also might try a higher quality diaper that is more absorbent and has better quality elastic. If you struggle with diaper rash or wet pajamas especially, upgrading the quality of your diaper can make a big difference!
