We hate to break it to you but… your swaddling days are almost over.

We know, it’s tough to think about your sweet little baby growing up. And it’s even tougher to think about potential sleep challenges that the transition might bring. But making this transition is important for keeping your baby safe.

The AAP recommends that babies transition out of the swaddle as soon as they start showing any signs of trying to roll, which can happen as early as 2 months old. But how exactly do you make this transition? And how do you make sure it doesn’t totally ruin your baby’s naps & night sleep?!

Don’t worry. We’ve got you. Here are 3 common methods for transitioning you can try.

1

Leave one arm out.
Swaddle your baby like normal, but leave one arm out. After a few nights, swaddle them around their belly and leave both arms out. This allows them to adjust more slowly and still gives them the cozy swaddle feeling around their middle.

1

Do a partial night.
Put baby to sleep for the night in a sleep bag or in a swaddle with both arms out. After their first night waking, put them back in the full swaddle. Aim to extend the time out of the swaddle each night. This should only be done if your baby is not yet rolling!

1

Go cold turkey.
Move your baby directly into a sleep bag. Many find this is the most effective method. Things might be a little hairy the first night or two, but your baby will eventually adjust. And if they don't, try the next method!

But what should your baby wear AFTER they make the transition?

Loose blankets are a definite NO until baby turns 1 due to suffocation risk. A sleep bag will keep your baby warm without the safety concern.

But what sleep bag should you use?

A breathable fabric will help with temperature regulation. And if you’re still dealing with middle-of-the-night changes, a sleep bag with a double zipper can really come in handy.
