Without a doubt, one of our most-used pieces of baby gear was our baby carrier. We used it on walks when we didn’t feel like lugging around the stroller, but we also used it around the house, especially for the first few months when our babies wanted to be held all. the. time.

Choosing a carrier can be tricky, though, because there are about a zillion different options and styles, and there’s also no one-size-fits-all solution. The perfect carrier for you and your family comes down to a variety of factors.

Here are 5 things to think about when choosing a baby carrier PLUS an exclusive offer on one of our team’s favorite carriers.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Baby Carrier

How easy is it to use?

This is a big one. Because while certain styles of carriers, like slings or wraps, are super cozy during the newborn phase, they can feel complicated and intimidating for some parents to use.

If ease of use is a top priority, look for styles with buckles or clasps.

Who will be wearing it?

If you anticipate multiple caregivers will be using the same carrier, you want to make sure it can be easily adjusted to different body types. Some carriers come in different sizes to fit different body types, while others have a one-size-fits-all design.

What age & stage is it designed for?

Some carriers are specifically designed with certain ages, like newborns, in mind. Others, like the Ergobaby Omni Breeze, can be worn throughout the first year or even all the way through toddlerhood because they have a higher weight limit and offer multiple carrying positions. Some parents like having a specific newborn carrier and then graduating to something else after the first few months, while others want to buy one carrier they can adjust as their baby grows.

How comfortable is it?

Choose a carrier that is comfortable for both you and your baby. For your comfort, some stores allow you to “try before you buy” so you can see how a carrier feels on your body and check the shoulder & back support. For your baby’s comfort, you want to make sure the carrier supports a hip-friendly position, where their hips are spread apart with the thighs supported and hips bent.

In slings, this looks like:

In structured carriers, this looks like:

Does it support your lifestyle?

Before you buy a carrier, think about how and where you plan to use it. If you imagine you will be using it when you travel, how easy is it to pack? If you plan to take it on hikes, consider how breathable the fabric is and if the carrier includes additional features like a sunshade. Also, make sure to check the care options to see if the carrier is machine washable or if you have to spot clean as needed.

WHICH CARRIER DID WE CHOOSE?

We opted for comfort, simplicity & portability

While there is no one carrier that works for every family,  when it comes to a newborn carrier, our team has used (and LOVED) the Ergobaby Embrace.

The Embrace is designed to be used for newborns, right from Day 1, with no need for an additional insert — and can be used until 25 lbs. It’s as cozy as a wrap but without any of the complicated knots. With just a few buckles, your baby is safely secured to your chest, and when they are old enough, it’s super easy to adjust the carrier to go from inward-facing to outward-facing so your curious baby can explore the world.

Like all Ergobaby carriers, the Embrace is designed to be supportive for parents and babies, always making sure your baby is sitting in a hip-healthy position. But unlike most other structured carriers, the Embrace is super compact. One mom on our team told us it was small enough to roll up and keep it in their diaper bag!

If you are still feeling stuck about which carrier to choose, you really can’t go wrong with the Embrace for newborns — and once you’re ready to move up you can upgrade to our next favorite, the Omni Breeze
