This first month of parenthood has probably been a bit of a learning curve — to say the least.  And one thing that new parents can find stressful is giving their tiny human a bath. Their bodies are insanely slippery, and let’s face it — many newborns don’t exactly love baths.

We rounded up the 4 most common bath time mistakes new parents make ( and tips for how to avoid them! ) to help make your life a little easier!

1

Bathing baby too frequently.

While bath time may become part of your nightly routine as your baby becomes a toddler, during the first year, you should aim to bathe your baby every couple of days (around 3x per week) to help prevent their skin from drying out. We know this can feel weird to some adults, but if you are keeping your baby’s diaper area clean, we promise it’s enough!

2

Not having everything you need within reach.

Babies and young children can drown in as little as an inch of water, so you never (never ever, ever) want to leave your baby unattended in a tub, even for a minute.

Since many parents bathe their newborns on the counter in a baby tub, it can also be helpful to have a shower caddy with all your supplies, so you can make sure you have everything with you and don’t have to run back to the bathroom to grab something.

3

Baby is too cold.

Even if the bathwater is perfectly warm, if your baby’s tummy is fully exposed to the air, they can still get cold, which can lead to tears. Next time, cover your baby’s belly with a warm washcloth and periodically pour warm water over it to help keep them warm.

4

Not using soap that’s made for babies.

Your baby’s skin is incredibly sensitive & delicate, and even the gentlest adult soaps can still be too irritating. This is why you want to use bath soap that’s made specifically for baby skin and is also unscented, mild, pH-neutral, and additive-free.

The good news is, though, that you don’t need to buy a separate baby shampoo. Generally, baby soaps double as shampoo.
